Nanowire fabrication kit

morreale Tuesday 23 of September, 2014
EChem Nanowires Education Foundation Inc. and Argonne National Laboratory have developed an educational kit that allows students to fabricate nanowires. The nanowire fabrication kit uses an insulated nanodiamond film on a substrate that is etched to expose edges of the nanodiamond film. An electroplating solution is added and the metal ions self align on the exposed nanodiamond film. The nanowires are lifted off the nanodiamond film for use in the intended application. The nanodiamond film can be reused indefinitely. Several short videos are available that show how the process works. It's a really neat idea and won the 2014 Award of the Year from R&D magazine.

Interview with Dr. Simon Sze

morreale Friday 15 of August, 2014
Tweaktown did a short interview with Dr. Simon Sze at the Flash Memory Summit 2014. Dr. Sze is the co-inventor of the floating gate and author of many books on semiconductor physics. He is working on a Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) on semiconductor physics according to his comments in the interview. I would really like to take his course.

Electromagnetism at the nanoscale

morreale Monday 28 of July, 2014
Nanotechweb.org has posted three podcasts on electromagnetism at the nanoscale. Professors Jennifer Dionne, Satoshi Kawata, and Adarsh Sandhu are interviewed in these podcasts. In podcast 1, these professors describe scattering at the nanoscale, non-progating light on surfaces, and interactions of light with non-magnetic materials that induce magnetic like responses in metamaterials. Podcast 2 describes electromagnetic interactions at the nanoscale, and podcast 3 describes future research of electromagnetism at the nanoscale.
